Night shift brewery krakatoa12/7/2023 ![]() ![]() With such a strong focus on quality, ingredient sourcing, and experimentation, it’s no surprise that Modern Times, Night Shift, and Hoof Hearted are all regarded as three of the best craft breweries in the country. Hoof Hearted uses coffee in most of their stouts, from Mom Jeans Double Milk Stout to the 14% ABV Fitness Freak. Modern Times uses 20 pounds of coffee in each 30-barrel batch of their Black House Oatmeal Coffee Stout, and Night Shift makes an Awake Coffee Porter. Now, when a craft beer recipe calls for the addition of coffee, consumers know they’re getting a high quality roast, as well as the best possible roast to complement the beer. ![]() When asked what percentage of the brewery’s revenue comes from beans, Volk said, “Probably under 5 percent.”Īs the craft beer industry continues to grow, coffee offers a still novel way to diversify revenue streams and differentiate. “Like our brewery, we’re looking to grow organically and through the lens of quality first,” Volk said, echoing the sentiments of Oxton. They’ve also released several runs of bourbon barrel aged beans. They also had tanks in which to store the coffee, and a liquid nitrogen doser so that they could nitrogenate the canned cold brew.Ĭurrently, Hoof Hearted sells their nitrogenated cold brew in four packs of cans, as well as 12-ounce bags of beans. For instance, the brewery has a canning line, so they were able to come right out of the gate with cold brew in cans. “As we’re fans of all things tasty, we thought we’d try our hands at it,” Volk said.Īlthough there was the upfront cost of the roaster, Hoof Hearted benefitted by already having a lot of the requisite equipment. Like Oxton and McKean, Volk approached the coffee program at Hoof Hearted out of an interest in the process. In late 2016 and early 2017, he passed his knowledge on to Brayden Volk, operations manager at the brewery, who now manages the coffee program. Between leaving his old job as a wine salesman and starting the brewery, Hoof Hearted cofounder Trevor Williams worked at a Columbus-based micro roaster called Backroom Coffee Roasters. In Columbus, Ohio, Hoof Hearted Brewing recently started roasting their own coffee. Additionally, both beer and coffee share some of the same production materials, and breweries can craft specific profiles to match those of their beers. Both beer and coffee are cultural touchstones, and one can geek out on ingredients, production and flavor profiles. If it initially seems strange that a brewery might want to enter the world of craft coffee, the two industries actually have a lot in common. “This whole thing is, of course, an experiment, and we’ll have to see how it goes,” wrote founder Jacob McKean. ![]()
